Price from what you want to keep, not a guess

Most freelancers pick a number that "sounds about right" and quietly underearn for years. The honest way to set a rate is to work backwards from the take-home income you actually want, then add the things employment hides from you: your own tax, your own expenses, and the fact that only some of your working hours are billable.

This calculator does that math in two directions. In income-goal mode, you tell it the take-home you want, your yearly expenses, your tax set-aside percentage and your realistic billable hours, and it returns the hourly, day and week rate you need to charge. In rate-check mode, you enter a rate you are considering and it shows the gross revenue, expenses, tax and the take-home you would actually be left with.

What it works out

Required hourly rate

The rate that hits your target take-home after tax and expenses — with the intermediate numbers shown.

Day & week rate

Derived from your hourly rate so you can quote fixed blocks of time with confidence.

Tax set-aside built in

Grosses up your goal so the rate already covers the tax you should be putting away.

Realistic billable hours

Encourages a true weeks-and-hours input, because admin and sales time are not billable.

Rate-check mode

Enter a rate and see the take-home it really produces before you commit to it.

Private & offline

Runs entirely in your browser. Your income goals never leave your computer.

How to calculate your rate in 3 steps

  1. Enter your target take-home income and your yearly business expenses.
  2. Add your tax set-aside % and your realistic billable hours per week and weeks per year.
  3. Read your rate — the calculator shows the hourly, day and week rate that gets you there.

From rate to invoice

Once you know your number, the rest of the workflow is offline too: track the billable hours you priced, turn them into an invoice with InvoicePro, lock the terms with a contract, and watch the money with the expense & tax tracker. Frequently asked questions

Is this rate calculator free?
Yes, completely. It runs in your browser with no account and nothing uploaded. There is no paid version of the calculator itself.
How do I calculate my freelance hourly rate?
Work backwards: add your target take-home and yearly expenses, divide by one minus your tax set-aside rate to get the gross revenue you need, then divide by your realistic billable hours per year. The calculator does this and adds a day and week rate.
Why is my rate higher than a salary divided by hours?
Because you pay your own tax, cover your own expenses, and only some hours are billable. Admin, sales and unpaid time push your billable hours well below your working hours.
Is my data private?
Completely. Zero network requests — your numbers stay on your computer.
Is this financial or tax advice?
No, it is a planning estimate. Tax rules vary by country — confirm your real set-aside rate with a professional.
